THE STORY BEHIND MY WORK
It Started With My Mother
For more than 25 years, I've photographed women in New York, Paris, Africa, and around the world. But the photograph that changed me most was one I made of my mother.
Like many women, she wasn't comfortable being in front of the camera. She worried about how she looked.
But something changed.
When she saw her photographs, she didn't focus on her wrinkles. She saw her strength. She saw the life she had lived. Then she looked at me and said, "I still look beautiful."
Watching her transformation changed the way I thought about photography forever.
After years behind the camera, I've learned that the women who say they're "not photogenic" are often the women most surprised by what they see.
By the end of the photoshoot, women leave with more than photographs. They leave with a new way of seeing themselves.
