It Started With My Mother
For more than 25 years, I’ve photographed women in New York, Paris, Africa, and beyond. But the photograph that changed the way I saw my work was one I made of my mother.
Like so many women, she wasn’t comfortable in front of the camera. She worried about how she looked and focused on the things she thought had changed with age.
Then she saw her photographs.
She didn’t see the wrinkles she had worried about. She saw her strength, her beauty, and the life she had lived.
She looked at me and said:
“I still look beautiful.”
That moment changed the way I thought about photography.
I realized that the women who tell me they’re “not photogenic” are often the women most surprised by what they see when they finally step in front of my camera.
Because a portrait can do more than show you what you look like.
It reminds you who you are.
